Parametric Facades: Design and GFRC Production
A parametric facade defines its geometry or panel layout through relationships between design parameters. Changing one parameter can update related parts of the model. Parametric describes a design approach rather than a material. GFRC is one option for producing components for such a facade.
Is every curved facade parametric?
A curved shape alone does not establish how it was designed. Parametric modelling defines relationships between components and variables. The result may be curved, perforated or composed of flat panels.
From model to manufacturable components
The architectural model needs to become a panel layout, component dimensions and drawings usable in production. Mould feasibility, repeated panel types, transport and installation can then be reviewed. An attractive render does not mean manufacturing drawings are ready.
What is the role of GFRC?
GFRC moulding can be considered for certain custom shapes and textures. Component dimensions, mould fabrication and detail requirements still impose constraints. Choose the material against project requirements rather than assuming a single best material for all parametric designs.
When should connections be reviewed?
Consider support locations, framing, connections and installation access alongside facade geometry. Project loads and connection requirements belong in the design documentation. This article introduces the process and does not replace project implementation documents.
What changes the cost?
The number of different panel types, mould reuse, component geometry and dimensions, colour and texture and the service scope influence an estimate. Give comparable drawings and scopes when comparing proposals. Distinguish production cost from the cost of a complete installed facade.
