Mashrabiya: Meaning, Facade Uses and GFRC
Mashrabiya is an architectural lattice screen. Historic wooden examples were used at windows, balconies and partitions to filter light, admit air and maintain privacy. Contemporary lattice facades can use different materials, including GFRC. Their actual performance depends on the design and project conditions.
Is every lattice panel a mashrabiya?
Lattice screen is a broader description of a surface with openings. Mashrabiya refers to an architectural element with a particular history and use. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes an Egyptian wooden example and its light, ventilation and privacy functions. A perforated panel is not automatically the same historic element.
How do light and privacy depend on the design?
Opening size and layout, and the screen’s position relative to windows, influence sunlight and views. The same pattern cannot be expected to produce identical results on every facade orientation or under every lighting condition. Evaluate the intended light and sightlines through design review or a sample before production.
Where can GFRC lattice panels be considered?

Is GFRC always better than wood or metal?
Material selection depends on shape, exposure, complete system weight, fabrication and maintenance. Universal superiority or crack-free GFRC claims are not a sound basis for an order. Consider the screen’s geometry and intended function separately from its material.
What should you send for a production enquiry?
Send the pattern file or image, panel dimensions, project location, colour and texture, quantity and proposed delivery schedule. Clarify support locations and connection design responsibility. State whether the enquiry covers panel production only or also requires a discussion of transport and installation.
