Featured Project: The Parametric Entrance of Tabriz University in GFRC Panels

A university entrance is the first thing thousands of people see every day — it must be unforgettable. With its grand parametric arches and free-form geometry, the Tabriz University entrance is one of the city's icons of modern architecture, and we at Montakhab Omran are proud to have manufactured and installed its GFRC panels.

The challenge

The architect's design consisted of large arches with continuous curved surfaces, where almost no two surfaces repeated. Executing such a form in traditional materials like stone or ordinary concrete would impose unacceptable weight on the structure and require extremely time-consuming precision formwork — for a project that had to be delivered on a tight schedule and to a high standard.

The solution: parametric GFRC panels

Our team first modelled the entire form in 3D and divided it into manufacturable pieces. Using parametric design technology, custom moulds for each piece were CNC-machined, and the panels were then produced in the factory from GFRC — concrete reinforced with glass fibers (what is GFRC?). The panels' light weight allowed the large arches to be installed without heavy auxiliary structures, and dry installation multiplied the speed of construction.

Durability in Tabriz's climate

Tabriz's cold winters, with their frequent freeze–thaw cycles, are a hard test for any material. GFRC's dense matrix and integral colour have kept the panel surfaces free of spalling, cracking or fading years after installation, preserving their original lustre.
